Chapter Seventeen

They were all around him, faces hidden by masks of silver, gold, copper. He could feel the furnace heat on his naked back; they had taken his soul silver from around his neck, placed it in a crucible above the flames.

He could feel the metal sweating. Soon it would be soft as flesh, soon weak as water....

"Listen, " the masked smiths whispered. "Listen and learn how all things began. Soon you will be in the flames: listen and survive. "

"Before the world was made, there were only Kiwan and Neetir, alone in the abyss of night, " a smith masked in copper said, and Moth recognized Tas No's voice. "There was neither birth nor death, nor hunger nor satisfaction, and there was nothing to do, so Kiwan and Neetir fought. Each time They fought They made new laws to govern how They were to fight, and each abided by the laws.

"Once when They were fighting, Neetir decided that Kiwan had broken the law. This had never happened before, and Neetir did not know what to do, but finally She decided, 'If Kiwan can break our laws, then so can I, ' and She gave birth to Sartor, to help Her battle against Kiwan. This is how birth came into the universe.

"Sartor and Neetir fought against Kiwan, and Kiwan was destroyed. This is how death first came into being. Sartor tore out Kiwan's heart and ate it. This filled Him with a great strength and a great fury, and He ate the rest of Her body. Then He turned on Neetir, His mother, and killed Her as He had killed Kiwan. But though Neetir was dead, Her tears continued to flow. We know them as rain, and when they fall to earth they become the Nacre's waters.

"After Sartor killed Neetir, He looked around Him for someone else He could fight and kill, but the universe was empty of all but Neetir's dead body. And looking at Her body, His fury left Him as He realized how beautiful Neetir and Kiwan had been, and how even in death Neetir was still beautiful. Sartor determined to fill the emptiness of the abyss around Him with Her beauty.

"From Neetir's bones and flesh, Sartor created the heavens and hells, and filled them with gods and demons. He made them beautiful, in memory of that beauty which had been Neetir's and Kiwan's, and He made them terrible, for such was His nature. What Sartor loved more than all else was killing and bloodshed, so He made the gods and demons to fight among themselves and to fight against Him, for they were stupid and did not know that Sartor had created them and was stronger than them all.

"From Neetir's face He plucked one of Her great yellow eyes, and blew upon it so that it grew fiery and hot and became the sun, to light the abyss for Him.

"For ages uncountable Sartor labored to create new heavens and hells, new gods and new demons, from Neetir's body.
